The exorcism took place one night when the clouds hid the moon. But the next day and the days after that, Immaculata and the women waited in vain for Akayezu to reappear. Mukamweziâs sorcery was clearly more formidable than theyâd thought.

â
Every night, Immaculata and the other devotees lamented loudly, no longer knowing who to implore.
âThat witch,â Immaculata said over and over, âthat concubine of the devil has dragged poor Akayezu, who only wished to baptize her and save her soul, to the deepest pits of Hell, to the land of shadows where the spirits of the dead wander lost, the abazimu who burn with an insatiable thirst, tongues hanging out, without even a drop of beer from their families. But why couldnât he defend himself, he who learned so many things for so long, whose inexhaustible flow of words could sway the worst miscreant? Mukamwezi is just an old woman. How could she have lured a man as young, handsome, and intelligent as Akayezu? How could he stand to share a mat with that scrawny heap of bones, or caress those withered dugs flapping off her like seed pods from a flame tree? But sheâs a witch, and no doubt she can transform herself into a beautiful maiden with taut, firm breasts and tempting round buttocks. Yes, Mukamwezi is one-eyed as death, but sheâs a witch and when she wants to she knows how to make eyes gentler than a heiferâs and speak in the soft, enchanting voice of a young virgin. And then who could resist her languorous gazes? Ah, my sisters, what sorrow, what terrible sorrow, let us weep loud and long, for Mukamwezi has taken possession of our Akayezu and never will she give him back and nevermore will we see him!â
